This release includes both the classic game Heroes of Might and Magic 3 HD edition (originally released in April 2010), as well as its expansion pack, Armageddon’s Blade (originally released in November 2011).
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was a revolutionary turn-based strategy game when it was first released. It has been heralded for its detailed world, involving storyline, innovative gameplay mechanics, high replayability and balance.
Since then a number of new features have been added including:
- Scenario mode with random map generator
- Multiplayer online games
- Skirmish mode that matches players against A. I. opponents
- Hotseat mode for multiplayer games on the same PC
- Improved single player campaign, featuring new locations, units and quests
The original game remains largely unchanged. The biggest change are the additions of online multiplayer games, using the Slitherine network. These are limited to single combat scenarios, due to difficulties with map compatibility. Skirmish mode has also been updated to include patch 1.4 features such as Forests of Enlightenment and Loyalty skills. Multiplayer matches can be played over TCP/IP or via Slitherine’s lobby system (which requires a separate download and account). There is also an option to play "Hotseat" style, by passing around a single PC among 2-4 players.
The expansion pack included in this package adds a number of new features to the original game. The most significant addition is a new 8-level campaign, where players can recruit many of the units from Heroes of Might and Magic II. This campaign continues from the end of the original campaign, and offers around 40 hours’ worth of gameplay. In addition, two extra scenarios have been added - one involving a battle with Archibald Ironfist’s undead army, and another involving a battle with Merick Farrow’s elvish army. As well as these scenarios, Armageddon’s Blade adds around 240 new units to Heroes 3.
